John Harris is a socialist who is disillusioned by New Labour. He sets out to answer the title of the book. If you feel that you would not be interested in this book then try to borrow a copy and read the chapter on Schools. He explains how the Vardy Foundation, for £2 million a time, have been handed effective control of brand new state schools. They can appoint the majority of the school governors who in turn have a great influence on the staffing. One of these schools is The Emmanuel College, Gateshead. These schools have a Fundamentalist Christian outlook and give equal weight to Creationism and Evolution in their science teaching. Tony Blair opened one of these schools, The Kings College, Middlesborough, in 2003.
