History of Humanism in the South-West

In 1991 10-year-old Cornish schoolgirl, Abigail Wright, was unable to join the Girl Guides because she expressed a doubt about taking the oath, which included a commitment to pray to God – she was excluded for being honest. Humanists in Cornwall, concerned by Abigail's rejection, formed Cornwall Humanists to promote Humanism at grass-roots level. The group quickly expanded to include Devon and became known as South-West Humanists. Devon Humanists became a separate organisation in 1993.

Not much seems to have changed in 20 years. Girl Guides still take the oath "I promise that I will do my best: To love my God, To serve the Queen and my country, …" Religion in schools including collective worship remains a much debated problem.
